Florida nursing schools funding
New Funding Aims to Address Nursing Shortage and Expand Training Capacity

Florida officials have announced a new investment of more than $20 million to support nursing education programs at colleges and universities across the state. The funding is part of a broader effort to address the ongoing nursing shortage and expand the healthcare workforce pipeline.
The funding will be distributed through Florida’s Linking Industry to Nursing Education (LINE) program, which provides matching grants to educational institutions that partner with healthcare providers to expand nursing education capacity.
How the Funding Will Be Used
According to state officials, the funding will be used to support several key areas in nursing education, including:
- Student scholarships and financial assistance
- Recruitment and retention of nursing faculty
- Purchase of equipment and training technology
- Expansion of simulation labs and clinical training programs
- Resources to help students prepare for licensure exams
These investments are designed to help schools accept more students into nursing programs and graduate more nurses into the workforce.
Where the Money Is Going
Of the $20 million investment:
- About $14.5 million will go to state colleges and private postsecondary institutions with nursing programs
- About $6 million will go to state universities that operate nursing programs
Several colleges and universities across Florida are expected to benefit from the funding, including institutions in Central Florida and the Tampa Bay region.
Why This Funding Matters
Healthcare leaders say one of the biggest barriers to expanding nursing programs is not student interest — it’s capacity. Many nursing schools have limited space, not enough instructors, and expensive training equipment, which prevents them from accepting more qualified applicants.
State officials say expanding nursing programs will help address the growing demand for nurses as Florida’s population continues to grow and healthcare needs increase.
In fact, projections show Florida could face a shortage of tens of thousands of nurses in the coming years, making workforce development a top priority for the state.
Part of a Larger Nursing Workforce Strategy
The $20 million investment is part of a larger statewide initiative that includes both the LINE program and another program called PIPELINE, which provides performance-based funding to nursing programs based on graduation rates and licensing exam pass rates.
Since 2022, Florida has invested hundreds of millions of dollars into nursing education through these programs to increase the number of trained nurses entering the workforce each year.
The Goal: More Nurses, Faster
State leaders say the ultimate goal of these investments is to:
- Increase the number of nursing graduates
- Reduce staffing shortages in hospitals and clinics
- Improve patient care across the state
- Strengthen the healthcare system for the future
As the demand for healthcare continues to grow, investments in nursing education are expected to play a major role in solving workforce shortages nationwide.
